The effort by Morgan and Carson to stage a Broadway musical against the wishes of ancient opera star Bates provides the basis for the tired-and-true plot around which some decent musical numbers, brilliant settings and costumes, and a sufficient number of laughs is built. Morgan eventually gets to see the show through, given help by Bates' husband Sakall as well as her granddaughter, Vickers, a budding star in her own right.
