Italian director Sergio Leone returned to the screen after a 12-year absence, and the result is this ambitious, sprawling, insightful, frustrating and ultimately challenging gangster film. The complex structure flashes back and forth from the 1920s to the 1930s and the 1960s, as Leone follows a group of Jewish kids who meet on Manhattan's Lower East Side and grow up to become powerful mobsters.
