Good news for parents who got dragged to POKEMON: THE FIRST MOVIE; here's a kid flick the little ones will doubtless adore yet also provide old-timers with enough moments of wit and visual magic to stave off a desperate mid-movie popcorn/ice cream/Twizzlers binge. In fact, even though this picture is aimed squarely at toddlers (and consequently lacks THE LION KING's "Circle of Life" Sturm und Drang) this is actually one of Disney's best animated features in ages, precisely because it doesn't try so damn hard. The studio's first theatrical release based on A. A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh franchise, this has a typically slight, feel-good kiddie plot line. Irrepressible Tigger (voice of Jim Cummings) tries to find his Tigger family and fails, only to realize by the movie's end that his woodland pals are already his family. But the look of the picture is wonderful (children's book watercolors grafted onto derivations of the familiar Ernest Shepherd Pooh illustrations) and the animation is surprisingly subtle. It actually gets more impressive as the story goes along, and the concluding avalanche sequence is a genuine tour de force as good as anything in TARZAN or THE LION KING. Better still, the de rigeur musical numbers — by vets Richard and Robert Sherman, back at Disney after almost 30 years — are not only far more palatable than anything Elton John and Tim Rice have turned out lately, they're occasionally downright droll. Pooh's lullaby to some angry honeybees and Tigger's big song-and-dance production number are particular standouts. Best of all, with a running time of less (quite a bit less, actually) than 90 minutes, this not only seems like but is without question the breeziest viewing experience now available at a multiplex near you. leave a comment --Steve Simels
