Young WW II officer Mason is shocked when he learns that the commanding officer of his new unit is none other than Mills, an arrogant, self-important man who used to work as a clerk in Mason's father's firm. Mills goes to great lengths to hide this information from his men, and Mason, using his commander's paranoia against him, begins to erode Mills's authority with the regiment.
