Another somber romantic epic from one of the only true low-budget
auteurs, producer-director-writer-star Hugo Haas. This time Haas tackles a period piece set in a 19th-century Moravian village. He plays an aging, ruthless judge whose beautiful wife, Moore, has a fling with her former
beau, Carlton. Soon Carlton's uncle turns up murdered, and Haas is quick to suspect Carlton as the killer. Unfortunately, the village idiot confesses to the murder before Carlton can be convicted. Haas kills the man so that the lover will hang. His wife has seen him kill the real murderer, so he
is forced to kill her as well. In the end, Haas is the one who goes to the gallows. ...
