Disappointing Hayward vehicle that slips, fairly often, into the realm of unintentional comedy, mainly because of Hayward's ludicrous Basque accent. The story is set in the Old West of 1847; Hayward plays the wife of Basque leader Esmond, whose mission is to guide his people to California territory where they will plant grapevines and start wineries. Though their marriage was arranged long ago and Hayward feels no passion for her husband, she remains faithful to Esmond despite the romantic attentions of brother-in-law Bergerac and hired scout Chandler. When Esmond is killed in an accident involving Chandler, Hayward agrees to comply with Basque tradition and marry her husband's brother. After a series of hardships including brush fires and Indian attacks, Bergerac realizes that Hayward loves Chandler and he rides off, leaving her to decide her own fate. Eventually the wagon train reaches its destination and Hayward, disgusted by her mindless devotion to the "cause" without regard to the many lives lost on the trail, pulls a freshly planted vine out of the ground. Chandler calms her down, replants the vine, and assures her that they have finally won the battle. leave a comment
