Thunder Alley: Review
Stock-car driver Fabian must retire after he blacks out while driving, causing the death of another racer. He therefore takes the demeaning job of staging phony crashes and spinouts at a "Thrill Circus" run by cheap promoter Murray. Among those racing cars on Murray's track are his own daughter, Funicello, and her beau, Berlinger. The bored Fabian trains Berlinger to race professionally, and the kid actually wins his first race. Discovering a new sugar daddy, Fabian's former girl friend, McBain, zeros in on Beringer, much to Funicello's dismay. This leads to some tension between Fabian and his protege, but as luck would have it, the pair are entered as partners in an important 500-mile race. While zooming along at top speeds, Fabian begins to have another blackout. He realizes that his fainting spells are caused by his guilt over the childhood accident in which he ran his brother over with a go-cart! Pretty funny (albeit unintentionally) stuff, directed by Richard Rush, whose next picture, HELL'S ANGELS ON WHEELS, became a biker classic and who eventually would win some respect by directing THE STUNT MAN.
