What was originally intended as a plain old WW I adventure film turned into a topical propaganda piece when Adolf Hitler unleashed the German U-boats in the Atlantic. Beery stars as a tough tugboat captain who joins the Navy after his boat is sunk by the German submarines. To his surprise, Beery's commanding officer is his hated tugboat rival Morris. This, of course, leads to Beery's violating his orders and foolishly setting out on his own to capture a sub. When he returns to the fleet, Morris busts him down to seaman and gives him shore duty. Eventually Morris relents and gives Beery active duty on a mission, but soon the former tugboat captain is captured by the Germans. Beery does not give up hope, however, and he cleverly taps a signal on the hull of the U-boat to warn Morris and his men of the sub's location so that they can capture it. leave a comment
