One of William Wyler's finest films. Although Lillian Hellman's adaptation of her own stage play jettisons the original lesbian subject to conform with the Hays Code, the resulting movie still abounds with repressed eroticism and is far superior to Wyler's far more explicit post-Code remake, The Children's Hour. Young Bonita Granville stars as a mean, vindictive girl who gets her revenge on her two private school teachers (Miriam Hopkins and Merle Oberon) by spreading nasty, potentially career-ending rumors.
