Ray is a lifer in the US Army, stationed in the Far East and slowly but surely becoming fond of the local village children. He starts to help the orphans by gathering up supplies of Army food for them, eventually emptying his own pockets in order to feed and shelter the kids. He also earns the love and respect of Kimura, who first serves as his interpreter and then becomes his wife. An interesting picture reflecting post-WW II sentiments, this shows the Japanese-hating Ray softening to the point of sacrificing for the children of his erstwhile enemy. The story is taken from the experiences of Master Sergeant Hugh O'Reilly, who acted as the technical adviser for the film. leave a comment
