Borgnine is a Navy security employee discharged by the Navy on a feeble pretext. He hires himself a lawyer, Milland. Communist affiliations are uncovered, but they're affiliations of the slightest description: subscribing to a communist-owned publication and joining a communist-inspired
study group. With the help of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Jagger, Borgnine is returned to duty in light of his longtime faithful service and community involvement. The story is based on the actual case involving Abraham Chasanow which appeared in a series of Pulitzer Prize-winning
articles.
