Holden receives top billing (in what was only his fourth picture) for the first time in this film which casts him as a man looking back on his college days at the turn of the century. A regular ladies' man who draws the wrath of all but his steadfast and loyal roommate Stone, Holden commits one too many pranks and finds himself facing judge Glaser in the courtroom. Holden is granted a week's continuance in an effort to find witnesses who will attest to his innocence. He learns that Granville is the judge's daughter and proceeds to woo her to get himself off the hook. Granville discovers Holden's scheme and, though she is hurt, helps him out anyway. Glaser lets Holden off on the condition he never see his daughter again. But, of course, Holden's fallen for her. He follows her everywhere, but Granville ignores him. In a desperate move, Holden ties her to a chair. He professes his true feelings and finally convinces Granville he is sincere. Glaser finds the couple and, in a fit of anger, has Holden tossed in jail. His fellow students rally behind the rogue's cause and riot in front of the jail, which finally causes Glaser to give in. The film ends some 36 years later, with Holden and Granville recounting the story at an anniversary party. Holden is wonderful in the role, giving a strong, comic performance. Only 22 when this was made, he showed an amazing range of emotion. Though the story is lightweight, the direction is breezy and fun, giving it ample energy. The film was based on the popular stories by Fitch and shot on location at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, the site of the famed Lincoln-Douglas debates. Watch for an early appearance by Alan Ladd in his pre-film noir days. leave a comment
