Prudence Cathaway (Joan Fontaine), daughter of a wealthy London surgeon of great repute, goes beneath her social station and volunteers for the WAAFs instead of entering the service as an officer, because she wants to go in at the bottom and attend training camp as a private. While in training, she gets fixed up with Clive Briggs (Tyrone Power), who is not in the service. Briggs, who was wounded at Dunkirk and placed on recuperation status, is a bitter young man from the working class who feels that the upper crust rules England and that saving their lives is hardly worth losing his. Briggs has no idea that Prudence is an aristocrat when they begin dating and, despite their vastly different backgrounds, she finds herself attracted to him. When the time for Clive to return to duty arrives, he goes AWOL and is branded a deserter, leaving Prudence to persuade him that England, despite its class conflicts, is worth fighting for. Adapted from a popular novel, THIS ABOVE ALL begins as an interesting look at heightened English class-consciousness during the war, but then disintegrates (as did the novel) into an unbelievable and treacly climax that violates the integrity of Power's character. The performances, however, are admirable, Fontaine having just received her Oscar for SUSPICION and Power finally beginning to be taken seriously as an actor. leave a comment
