In order to write about older fashions and customs, Morishige goes to a small fishing village near Tokyo. There he observes the local people in their everyday life, including a former alcoholic who cares for his disabled wife, a frustrated and confused newlywed whose wife will not sleep
with him, a mother and beggar daughter who have a head-to-head confrontation, and a man who lives aboard a boat and reminisces about his younger days and the girl he loved. A telling look at Japanese village life and customs.
