This star-studded musical salute to the American soldier is filled with Irving Berlin's songs and morale-boosting patriotism. Taken from Berlin's stage play, which opened July 4, 1942, THIS IS THE ARMY also adapts portions of Berlin's earlier musical "Yip Yip Yaphank." Jerry Jones (George Murphy) is a big-time Broadway star who, at the beginning of WWI, is drafted into the service and given the job of putting on a big show. He does his bit and, when the show ends, cast and crew go off to fight in Europe. Years pass and Jerry is now a producer with a son, Johnny (Ronald Reagan, who joined Murphy in rising through California politics), who is drafted in WWII and given the same job as his father. Johnny writes a terrific show and marries sweetheart Eileen Dibble (Joan Leslie). The show tours the country and at the final performance, before the boys go to war, Irving Berlin (as himself) comes onstage in Washington to sing. The plot is just barely enough to hang the musical numbers on, but it's the tunes that count. Berlin used his clout to get the Army to lend him more than 300 soldiers for the stage show, promising to donate more than a million dollars from the show's receipts to a relief fund for the families the boys left behind. leave a comment
