An old-fashioned romantic melodrama, largely set in Ireland in the 1930s and strictly a family affair for the Brothers Quinn: Aidan stars, Paul wrote and directs and brother Declan provided the sharp cinematography. In contemporary Chicago, Kieran Johnson (James Caan) is trying to teach his high school history class the importance of knowing one's roots, but in fact knows little about his own. When he comes across a photo of a man he suspects may be his father — his mother, who conceived him out of wedlock shortly before emigrating from Ireland, suffered a stroke and is unable to answer his questions — Kieran decides to return to the old country and dig up his family tree. With his troubled young nephew Jack (Jacob Tierney) in tow, Kieran travels back to the small Irish town of Kilruin where an old woman (Moira Deady) who once knew Kieran's mother transports us back to the year 1934, when a handsome young farm-worker (Aidan Quinn) of dubious background had the gumption to woo the prettiest girl in Kilruin (Moya Farrelly). The film is clearly a labor of love for the Quinns — and that's not entirely a good thing. A lot of material that should have been cut at the writing stage is left in: the framing story is too long, the flash-fowards are intrusive and a silly bit involving John Cusack as an American flier has no business being in the film at all. Still, it's gooey in all the right places, and there's plenty to enjoy if thoughts of star-crossed lovers, family curses, country dances and love letters left under a rock don't make your toes curl. leave a comment --Ken Fox
