If every generation is doomed to suffer its own BIG CHILL, gay 20-somethings could do a lot worse than director Brian Sloane's frothy romantic comedy. A tight-knit circle of college friends reunite in Washington, DC, for the wedding of Carol (Lauren Valez) and Matt (Jamie Harrold). Bob (Alexis Arquette), whose miserable senior year was spent nursing an unrequited love for apparently straight best friend Brendan (Christian Maelen), is now a successful soap-opera writer and arrives on the arm of soap dish Sterling Scott (Tuc Watkins). Bob and Sterling are even considering a ceremony of their own, until the unexpected arrival of Brendan, who's not nearly as straight as he once thought he was. For all its modest trappings, this awfully ambitious little film occasionally suffers from wanting to be too many things at once. It's not really a screwball comedy, and Sloan disrupts his own natural, breezy vibe when he tries to cut and paste screwball motifs into the action. Nor is it truly an ensemble piece: It's Bob and Brendan's show, and secondary characters who clock a lot of a screen time remain underdeveloped. But even when the movie stumbles, some very sharp writing, a snappy Partridge Family soundtrack and the fresh cast of newcomers -- Watkins and Maddie Corman, who plays Bob's pal Beth, are particularly good -- provide enough bounce to get it back on its feet. leave a comment --Ken Fox
