1941, Movie, NR, 72 mins

Entertaining, undemanding picture about gangsters and a witty grandmother who shows a tough hood just what she's made of. Darwell stars as the grandmother of Albert, a tenderfooted kid who wants to marry his sweetheart, Leslie, but can't get the needed dough to start a household. So Granny suggests he use his expected inheritance to get a loan. He does better than this by selling it to hood Cavanaugh for a hefty sum, who turns right around and jacks up the interest price for Quinn. Quinn then tries to force Albert's father to buy the inheritance back. He eventually resorts to the kidnaping of Darwell. The hoods get more than they bargained for with Darwell, who uses the imagination inspired by dozens of radio shows to totally turn the tables on Quinn. He winds up giving the inheritance back without receiving a single cent. No one except Darwell has much to do in this picture, and those performances revolve around the little old lady. For the most part, this works out all right, with Darwell being a delight to watch as she shows a deft use of the gangster slang. leave a comment
