Forget the killer bees — the inhabitants of Orrs Island, Maine, have to worry about killer cockroaches in this made-for-cable fright film. Recently divorced, recovering alcoholic Dr. Ben Cahill (Thomas Calabro) has a minor breakdown in the ER and is told to take a leave of absence, so he decides to fix up the isolated vacation home he and his now-ex wife bought a year earlier. Cahill gets off on the wrong foot with the Orrs Islanders, especially Jack Wald (John Savage), whose family once owned the house Ben now inhabits. Pretty much the only local who will give Ben the time of day is no-nonsense Nell Bartle (Kristen Dalton), who's understandably disenchanted with the drunken, underemployed fishermen who comprise most of the island's pool of eligable men. On top of his other troubles, Ben finds his new home infested with giant bugs that bear a striking resemblance to Madagascan hissing cockroaches, and when locals start turning up dead, Ben wonders whether the bugs might be to blame. Sheriff Hobbs (Dean Stockwell) is more inclined to blame a lethal combination of drink and clumsiness, but Ben persists in his suspicians and it's soon apparent that the alien roaches — which drifted ashore in the body of a merchant sailor — are a clear and present danger. Can Ben and Nell galvanize the islanders to fight back, or is it HELLSTROM CHRONICLE time on Orrs Island? Formulaic man vs. hostile nature tale, efficiently directed by New Zealand native Ellory Elkayem, who moved on to the big-budget giant spider movie EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS (2002). leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
