This chiller crawls too, though the computer-generated bug attacks should make vermin-phobic viewers sit up and pay attention. When biophysics student Brian "Bean" Gage (Chasen Hampton) dies in a suspicious fire, the police listen to rumors about his drub abuse. Bean's brother, Lt. Ted Gage (Daniel Cosgrove), doesn't buy that explanation and shares his own theory, which involves the use of a military explosive as a firestarter, with Detective Gina O'Bannon (Tamara Davies). Lt. Gage, a Green Beret who's about to be court martialed, conducts his own investigation by contacting Bean's oh-so-helpful professor, Mr. Jurgen (Dennis Boutsikaris). An unknown assailant kills an exterminator at a grain storage unit, and the pathologist notices a similarity to Bean's corpse; the internal organs have been removed! Believing this is a human killer's signature, O'Bannon captures retired serial-murderer Tiny Frakes (Mickey Rourke), whose cult might advocate extracting a victim's innards. Gage is on his own wild goose chase, pursuing Bean's lab partner, Lazarus (Brandon Karrer), but before Gage can interview him, the student's house explodes. What no-one realizes is that they're not looking for a human culprit: the killers are roaches! With the help of a computer hacker, Gage links military terminology on his brother's computer to military experiments financed at universities; perhaps Bean knew too much about a government program to breed bugs as biological weapons. Gage's suspicions about Professor Jurgens and his tacit support of the Pentagon program prove to be partially true, and with O'Bannon's assistance, Gage must foil a genetic mastermind who controls a legion of insects capable of forming themselves into one big cockroachy monster. Lame dialogue and an overly complicated story undermine this thriller, which starts out with the advantage that it's a rare person who doesn't get the chills at the thought of roaches, let alone super-roaches with freakish powers. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
