An intriguing WW II drama in which Sanders infiltrates Nazi espionage circles in order to discover the identities of spies working in the U.S. An American FBI agent born in Germany, Sanders assumes the identity of a dead spy, enabling him to make contact with Nazi intelligence officials. He narrowly escapes death when his real identity is discovered just as he exits a German sub and lands on American soil. There he must appear in a drawn-out court case in which the various spies are convicted. Told almost entirely in flashback, using the courtroom as the continuity device, the plot forces Sanders to retain the German identity until the air is totally clear. Though this flashback method is not really called for by this type of material, it helps lend an atmosphere of realism to situations which are at times hard to swallow. Another suave performance by Sanders and solid direction are big pluses. leave a comment
