They Call Me Mister Tibbs

The second in the series of three films built around the exploits of tough city cop Virgil Tibbs (the first was IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, the third THE ORGANIZATION) has Sidney Poitier, in the title role, investigating the violent murder of a prostitute. The prime suspect is Tibbs' close friend activist minister Logan Sharpe (Landau), who is in the middle of a fight to pass a bill which would clean up the city government. Investigating all the suspects, including the girl's pimp, Tibbs encounters several threats against his own life but eventually pins down the culprit.
