Georges Franju's incredibly faithful adaptation of Francois Mauriac's novel about a woman, Riva, who feels trapped in her marriage to the pompous, French upper-class Noiret. In order to escape from her country chateau life, Riva poisons Noiret with arsenic, but the dosage isn't lethal.
Instead of jail, Riva is allowed to return home when Noiret refuses to file charges against her. Noiret devises his own prison for Riva and locks her in a room, allowing her only cigarettes and wine to sustain life. She rapidly deteriorates, and when his friends are shocked at her appearance
