A seemingly forgotten film, THERE'S ONE BORN EVERY MINUTE sports a nine-year-old Elizabeth Taylor in her movie debut. She plays the bratty sister of equally bratty OUR GANG alumnus Alfalfa Switzer, both children of bumbling pudding manufacturer Herbert. Herbert is drafted into his town's mayoral race by the village bosses who want to deal with someone manageable. To boost the popularity of his pudding, Herbert declares that it contains the vital, little-known "vitamin Z," and sales skyrocket along with his political campaign. When Vitamin Z is revealed to be a hoax, the town bosses try to dump Herbert and expose him as a fraud, but the scrappy pudding seller turns the tables and exposes them as the crooks. Herbert wins the election despite his pudding scandal. While Herbert is fine in the role, the film lacks real punch due to the contrived situations and rather tame lunacy. The movie was suspected at one time as being a discarded project for W.C. Fields. The title certainly belongs alongside NEVER GIVE A SUCKER AN EVEN BREAK and YOU CAN'T CHEAT AN HONEST MAN, and the plot and character names beg for Fields' participation. The film apparently wasn't considered too memorable by its stars. When asked during an interview what it had been like to work with Taylor, Moran responded, "I never worked with Elizabeth Taylor. Your information is wrong." In Taylor's 1964 autobiography, she refers to the film only by its working title, "Man or Mouse." leave a comment
