Columbia's copy of MGM's highly successful "Thin Man" series casts Douglas and Blondell as a comic detective couple. Business has been lousy, so Douglas has taken back his old job as an investigator with the district attorney's office. Blondell is sitting in the empty office when Astor enters, plunks three hundred dollars on the desk, and asks that Douglas take her case. Blondell's eyes grow large looking at the money and she decides to look into the matter herself. Of course her sleuthing gets her into trouble, including being charged with murder and given the third-degree. In the film's funniest scene, it is the policemen who eventually crack, while Blondell continues to sit in the harsh light, smiling cheerfully and apparently oblivious to the whole thing. In the end, Douglas helps unravel the mystery, proving Astor and Cowan the killers, and the way is paved for the sequel that came the same year (THERE'S THAT WOMAN AGAIN). The script was surprisingly good, largely due to the uncredited efforts of Ryskind, Sayre, and Rapp. The teaming of Blondell and Douglas worked quite well, and it was possibly the fact that Blondell was replaced by Virginia Bruce in the sequel that accounts for the aspiring series' dying an early death. Rita Hayworth had a fairly substantial role in the film as originally shot, playing a secretary in the district attorney's office who spies for Blondell, but thinking they were launching a series, the Columbia executives didn't want any characters who would be missed in subsequent installments so they cut Hayworth's part down to a half-minute of screen time. leave a comment
