1987, Movie, R, 93 mins

Based on Christopher Durang's play, which starred John Lithgow and Dianne Wiest on Broadway, BEYOND THERAPY is a farce about the absurdity of psychotherapy. Bruce (Jeff Goldblum) is a bisexual who, tiring of his flamboyant lover (Christopher Guest), places an ad in a personal column. He has a disastrous meeting with the uptight Prudence (Julie Hagerty), sending both scurrying for their analysts--Bruce to Charlotte (Glenda Jackson) and Prudence to Stuart (Tom Conti). A thoroughly irritating film, BEYOND THERAPY is meant to be a comedy on the order of the classic French farces, but instead is a haphazard collection of sporadically funny segments. However, there are some fine performances: Goldblum and Hagerty have a splendid rapport, and much of the dialogue between Conti and Hagerty is viciously funny. leave a comment
