Back At The Front

1952, Movie, NR, 87 mins

A fairly good sequel to the original UP FRONT. Lembeck and Ewell reprise their Willie and Joe roles. The war is over, but they're called back into service and sent to Japan. Through some unlikely plot twists, they eventually get embroiled in a smuggling scheme (weapons to North Korea) and are then sent home by their commander before relations between the US and Japan are jeopardized. There are some very funny sequences, including Willie and Joe feigning all sorts of ailments to keep out of the service, a big chase, and a hysterical sequence in a Japanese bath. The script by McGuire (who also wrote some of TOOTSIE and is a comic novelist of some note--1600 Floogle Street), Breslow, and Brodney (THE BRASS BOTTLE) is a good example of how to cram a lot of chuckles into less than 90 minutes. Look for Russell Johnson (the "Professor" on TV's "Gilligan's Island"). leave a comment
