A very amusing comedy, the kind of cops and robbers antics that only the British seemed capable of making in the 1950s and 1960s. Sellers pretends to be the owner of a posh dress shop in the upper-crust area of Bond Street. It's just a front, though. His real occupation is leading a pack of London thieves. The burglary business is well organized, and the various crooks have made a vow not to tread in one another's territories. That all blows up when a trio of felons from down under arrives impersonating police officers. They grab the loot, and Sellers is in a quandary. Up until now everything has been running smoothly, and Sellers has been running his "business" like a benevolent Henry Ford, with free lunches, paid vacations in Spain, and even showing his cohorts films like RIFIFI as part of their continuing education. Sellers catches on that he's been had but doesn't realize that the men raided his place after having been informed of the location by Sellers' amour, Newman. Sellers calls for a general confab with all of the other honest crooks in London and they make a deal with Scotland Yard for a one-day truce so they can join forces and nab these Aussies who are ruining matters for all concerned. To do this, they fake a gold robbery and Yardman Jeffries is assigned to be one of crooks. Jeffries is an incompetent, and the whole thing goes up for grabs, so they have to set a second snare involving an armored car at the airport. Sellers steals the money, but Jeffries is handcuffed to the money box. All of the gangs are apprehended save Sellers and his group. They get away on a plane, along with stowaway Newman. When they arrive on a tropical island, they are shocked to see that the money in the strongbox is bogus. Shrugging that off, the gang settles down in the sunny paradise and goes into business manufacturing grass skirts for the local denizens. Fast-moving, very witty, and filled with excellent character bits. leave a comment
