Courtneidge, in a dual role, plays both the reigning queen and the retired queen mother of a family troupe of traveling music-hall performers. The matriarch's word is law in this family, and Courtneidge the younger had been forbidden by Courtneidge the elder to marry a young Guards officer 15 years earlier, a marriage which would have finished his career in the stuffy, upper-class soldiery. A similar situation arises when ingenue Hyson falls in love with Guardsman Bushell.
