The Wizard Of Loneliness: Review
Based on a novel by John Nichols, author of
The Milagro Beanfield War
, THE WIZARD OF LONELINESS is an atmospheric coming-of-age tale set in a small Vermont town during WW II. Lukas Haas plays Wendall Olet, a precocious 12-year-old who is sent to live with his grandparents. Sullen and isolated, Wendall believes himself to have great powers. Wendall's aunt and uncle (Lea Thompson and Lance Guest) mourn the death of Duffy (Dylan Baker) who is thought to have been killed in the war. Actually, Duffy has returned to the small town unnoticed, his mind warped by combat and given to fits of violence. Drenched in golden-hued nostalgia, THE WIZARD OF LONELINESS looks like the images of Norman Rockwell, but something is askew in the little community, its normal life interrupted by the war. Unfortunately, the screenplay is sabotaged by implausibilities. The film's ending has less to do with reality or dramatic necessity than it does with arriving at a convenient way to tie together thematic loose ends. Haas contributes a fine performance as the odd, initially unsympathetic but ultimately engaging "wizard." Thompson, Guest, and Randolph also do nice turns.
