Life at a nurses' training school in the Midwest is portrayed with the usual 1930s woman-picture conventions fully intact. Young, arriving at Fox after a stint of romantic roles at Warner Bros., plays an unusually dramatic role as a woman who learns a few things about herself while studying for her nursing degree. Boles, a rich Boston boy, gives her a choice: a career or him. It's tough, but in the end she sticks by her trade, convinced that helping others will truly bring her the happiness she desires. The cast is strong as it goes about the usual complications, guided by even direction. THE WHITE PARADE is really nothing but a soap opera but is well done. It earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, losing to IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT. leave a comment
