Those hoping to see a filmed version of Samuel Butler's famed semi-autobiographical novel will be very disappointed in this picture, which has nothing to do with that classic of literature. This film is a saccharine tearjerker about an honest businessman who ventures to the big city only
to wind up on the skids, mistakenly believed to be dead. Many years later, he returns to his country home where his wife and family have aged but have not forgotten his memory. C.B. DeMille filmed the first version silently in 1918 as THE WHISPERING CHORUS, and a second silent version appeared in
1927 with Emil Jannings.
