This remake of the Edward G. Robinson-Humphrey Bogart vehicle of 1937, KID GALAHAD, transfers the action from the boxing world to the circus world. Bogart is the owner of a run-down carnival which he desperately tries to keep his convent-schooled sister, Leslie, away from. By keeping her on a distant farm, Bogart feels that he can protect her from the evils that the carnival atmosphere breeds. The carnival runs into trouble when the perpetually soused lion tamer, Rumann, inadvertently lets one of the cats loose. It wanders into a nearby general store clerked by Albert, who calmly corners the animal with a pitchfork. Bogart, impressed with Albert's ease around lions, offers him a job with the circus, replacing the embittered Rumann. It's not long, however, before Albert meets Bogart's sister and falls for her. In the meantime, Bogart is involved in his own romance with Sidney, a fortune teller who bills herself as "Madame Florina." When Bogart learns of Albert's meddling in his previously well-secured private life, he plots to kill him. He forces Albert into the lion's cage with Caesar, the most ferocious lion in the circus. When Sidney sees what has happened, she rushes to Leslie for help. Albert survives the battle with the beast when Bogart has a change of heart and enters the cage to aid the troubled lion tamer. Bogart, however, falls victim to the animal. After surviving the fight with Caesar, Albert finds himself up against Rumann, who has returned to the circus brandishing a gun with the intent of taking revenge on Bogart and Albert. Albert emerges from this battle alive as well, taking Leslie with him, while Sidney remains behind with her crystal ball and tarot cards. An entertaining but predictable picture which was quickly forgotten, mainly because it was bookended by two of Bogart's finest--HIGH SIERRA and THE MALTESE FALCON. leave a comment
