The Valiant: Review
Slow-moving WW II naval suspense thriller starring Mills as the tough captain of a British battleship stationed in Alexandria Harbor in 1941. When two Italian frogmen are captured while attempting to mine the vessel, Mills tries to force them to reveal if they had indeed planted any mines, and, if so, when they are set to explode. The Italians refuse to talk, and Mills lets them sit (one is wounded) with the crew awaiting the explosions. The tension begins to get to the British sailors, who question their commander's wisdom and ethics. Eventually the Italians reveal that there is a mine, but they refuse to tell the location or time of the explosion. Mills evacuates the ship, leaving the prisoners behind, but he remains and overhears them discussing where they have put the mine after they think the ship is empty. Having gained the information, Mills tries to have the mine removed. Before he can mobilize his men, the mine explodes, crippling the ship. Knowing that Italian reconnaissance planes will be arriving to report whatever damage the ship sustained, Mills fakes them out by having some of his men go on the deck and act as if all is well, while the rest of the sailors go below and try to repair the ship. In the end it appears that both the British and the Italians have won the battle of nerves.
