Decent cast has trouble rescuing this stale hoodlum drama starring Gabin and Frobe as aging gangsters who run an international gold-smuggling organization. Seeking fresh, unknown faces to transport their booty throughout Europe, they hire unemployed journalist Brook, who is actually a US government agent out to smash their operation because the two are suspected of having connections with American mobster Raft, who is selling guns to the Cubans. After some digging it is obvious to Brook that Gabin has never allowed himself to be taken in by the Mafia, but after Raft and his men cripple Gabin's operation, the gold runner is forced to capitulate. Meeting with Raft, Gabin pretends to be under his thumb but plants a bomb and flees before the explosion kills everyone. Brook reveals his true identity to Gabin, saying that he admires the old gangster's courage, but Gabin spurns any compliments from the law. leave a comment
