Rains turns in a compelling performance as a deranged radio personality who hosts a murder-mystery show in which he re-creates crimes with startling realism. It's not surprising that his show is so successful once we learn that he actually is a murderer. Rains kills one of his female employees, but this "perfect" crime risks exposure through the presence of North, who wants to avenge his fiancee's death. He pulls Rains's niece, Caulfield, into the picture by attempting to convince her that he is her long-lost husband. Rains tries to poison Caulfield, but is exposed as the killer that he is and receives just punishment. The stylish film noir atmosphere created by director Curtiz owes much to Bredell's stunning camerawork. Jack Meredyth Lucas also made an important contribution as the dialog director. leave a comment
