The Truth: Review
Bardot is on trial for murdering her lover. The prosecution says the crime was premeditated and the death penalty should be invoked, while the defense says that her crime was one of passion. Bardot's story is told in flashback. She had been living a bohemian life on the Left Bank. After having an affair with her sister's boy friend Frey, a young music student, she continues to engage in numerous sexual encounters. But Frey has fallen for her and the two have a terrific fight. She ends up a streetwalker, while Frey becomes a celebrated symphony conductor. Bardot learns that Frey has become engaged to her sister (Nat) and comes to realize that Frey is the only man she has ever loved. She goes to his flat and they spend the night together, but the next day Frey throws her out, calling Bardot a slut. She decides the only thing to do is kill herself in front of him but he laughs this off with insults. Angered, Bardot shoots Frey and tries to kill herself. The police find her before she dies, however, and Bardot recovers to be put on trial. When her trial is over, Bardot comes to believe that the jury won't take her love for Frey as real because of her past. Distraught, she takes a piece of broken mirror and slashes her wrists.
