Aging baronet Harvey sits in his drawing room with his son-in-law discussing that universal male topic: women. The female gender is inexplicable, claims Harvey, and through flashbacks he tells of his exploits with the fair sex. At various times in his youthful career as a philanderer, Harvey tried his hand at seducing a suffragette, tried kidnaping a young lady from a harem, got involved with a married woman, and finally met Philpotts who became the love of his life. This has some funny moments, but the going gets repetitive and often tedious. It's not nearly as witty as it thinks it is, though Harvey does lend a certain grace to the proceedings. The direction is simply too serious for what should have been a much lighter comedy, so the film falls far short of its intentions. The attention to period detail in the art direction is notable. leave a comment
