Raft is a Mexican who returns home after being educated in the US. His older brother, Menjou, is a retired bandit, still sought by the police, who wants Raft to marry the girl Menjou has picked out for him and take a respectable job. Raft, however, falls in love with Menjou's mistress, dancer Drake, and wants to become a bullfighter. He is too much a man of honor to take his brother's woman, but under the tutelage of Ellis does become a matador in Mexico City. There he again meets Drake and soon they are living together. Menjou learns of this domestic arrangement and refuses to speak to his brother again. Menjou's rejection weighing on his mind, Raft drinks heavily and his nerve begins to go. Drake goes to Menjou and asks him to forgive his brother, and he travels to the city although he knows the police are still on the lookout for him. At the arena that afternoon, a bull is about to gore Raft when Menjou jumps into the ring, attracting the attention of the bull and the cops. He pauses briefly to give his blessing to Raft and Drake before making good his escape. One of the worst films Raft ever made, both for the sheer inanity of the plot and the ridiculous miscasting of both Raft and Menjou as Mexicans. A real matador, Jose Ortiz, who was immortalized by Ernest Hemingway, was brought out to Hollywood to coach Raft in the ways of the cape and sword, but to no avail. Raft just looks silly in the matador's "suit of lights" and little hat. Dapper Menjou is even more out of place as a Pancho Villa-type bandit. The two didn't get along well on the set and at one point Menjou punched Raft in the mouth, splitting his lip. This film finally killed Paramount's notion of building Raft into a romantic lead. leave a comment
