This promising feature film debut from writer-director Gary Walkow is a low-budget comedy about a rather uncinematic subject--writer's block. Dick Kendred (Tom Villard) is a struggling writer who moves into a boardinghouse where his ex-flame Diane (Susan Dey) lives. He soon gets involved with both his divorcee landlady (Elaine Giftos) and her teenaged daughter (Elizabeth Gorcey). Intercut with his romances are scenes from the novel Dick would like to write, The Galactic Chain Gang. THE TROUBLE WITH DICK is a consistently funny film that contains winning performances from Villard, Dey, Giftos, and Gorcey. Director Walkow understands the limitations of low-budget filmmaking and uses his two settings (the house and the desert) to good advantage, creating a feeling of claustrophobia without ever becoming repetitive or boring. leave a comment
