A highly unconventional love triangle forms the basis of this agreeably scruffy comedy from German director Hermine Huntgeburth. Zobel (Götz George), his daughter Lizzie (Jeanette Hain) and Zobel's long-time lover Karl (Christian Redl) are a ragtag gang of pickpockets who tour Germany in a battered trailer, pulling small-time crimes at shopping malls and airports. During one particularly inept job, Karl is run over by an speeding car and Lizzie and Zobel are forced to find a replacement. Lizzie hits on Rudolf (Felix Eitner), a handsome gas station attendant who once tried to rob Karl at a carnival, and after a few quick lessons in spotting marks and lifting wallets, the new trio hits the road. Once the sleeping arrangements in the cramped trailer are worked out, Zorel lays down the law: There will be absolutely no exchange of bodily fluids within the team. But it's a rule that's bound to be broken, first by Lizzie, then by Zobel himself. The whole notion of a father and daughter vying for the attentions of the same man is bound to make a few people uncomfortable, but Huntgeburth, who also cowrote the screenplay, sets this unusually gritty sex farce in a world of petty crime, carnies and dingy rest-stops where the usual rules no longer apply. Both Zobel and Lizzie are lonely characters -- Zobel (brilliantly played by George), finding himself suddenly alone, fears growing old and Lizzie's life of crime has cut her off from anyone her own age -- and there's an element of sad desperation in their pursuit of Rudolf. Only the tacked-on ending rings false: Huntgeburth ultimately sacrifices thematic cohesion for sake of dramatic resolution by trying to put a too sunny spin on a surprisingly bittersweet affair. leave a comment --Ken Fox
