New York City-based low-budget schlock kings Troma, Inc., make a bid for midnight cult-movie status with this bizarre combination of science fiction, horror, and comedy, of which the ads exclaimed, "He was 98 pounds of solid nerd until he became...The Toxic Avenger--the first Super-Hero from New Jersey!" Filmed on location in that beautiful state (home of many a toxic-waste site), THE TOXIC AVENGER follows the story of hapless, nerdy janitor Melvin (Mark Torgl), who just can't seem to fit in among the nubile young fitness nuts at the health club where he works. A victim of a practical joke, Melvin accidentally falls into a vat of toxic waste, transforming him into a powerful monstrosity with bubbly skin (now played by the muscular Mitchell Cohen). The Toxic Avenger discovers that he now possesses incredible strength and, fortunately for New Jersey, is compelled to destroy evildoers and aid the helpless. Though it is silly, sleazy, and graphically violent, THE TOXIC AVENGER does hold a bit of warped charm for fans of this sort of thing. leave a comment
