The Thundering Herd: Review
Better than average Zane-Grey-inspired oater starring Scott as a brave buffalo hunter out to stop loathsome villain Beery, who has been stirring up trouble between the white settlers and the Indians so that he can steal a fortune in buffalo hides. To complicate matters, Scott is in love with Beery's daughter Allen, Cecil B. DeMille's great star discovery of the year before. A good cast and swift direction by Henry Hathaway make this worth a look. Heavy doses of stock footage of the same material from the 1925 silent version (which also featured Beery and Hatton) do not get in the way at all. Chief among these was a beautifully staged stampede of massed covered wagons going across a frozen lake, by the great silent director William Kerrigan Howard, who later in his career was deprecated as being a slick, commercial director, but who nevertheless made many grand actioner westerns full of dramatic tension. Allen, alas, after an inauspicious debut in THIS DAY AND AGE (1933) wound up in low-budget westerns and dramas.
