A depressing Chekhov adaptation from Russian director Samsanov about three sisters who lead a dreary life of suffering in a garrison town, longing only to return to Moscow. Instead of getting better, their lives get worse when their brother marries and lets his wife manage the family
funds. Before long the family is deep in debt, fire destroys the town, and the love affairs of the girls end as the troops pull out. The finale has them all wondering whether their lives will ever improve. Released in Russia in 1964.
