The Three Caballeros: Review
A smashing follow-up to SALUDOS AMIGOS, this is one of the most dazzling achievements of the cartoon genre. Donald Duck opens presents on his birthday, the first of which is a movie projector. He puts film on the projector and we are plunged into the tale of Pablo the Penguin, who is sick and tired of the Antarctic cold and wants to live in the tropics, and a story about a little Mexican boy who finds a donkey with wings. Donald's next present is a large book. The moment he opens it, up pops Joe Carioca (from SALUDOS AMIGOS), then we're off on one of the fastest-moving cartoon sequences ever devised, as the two travel to Brazil, where Donald meets and falls in love with Aurora Miranda (in a huge production number that's as elaborate as anything Busby Berkeley ever choreographed). A breakneck trip around Mexico follows, during which Donald, Joe, and Panchito the rooster cavort with beautiful women and dance with animated plants (as well as with Carmen Molina, who does her trademark "Jesusita" number). THREE CABALLEROS also includes the famous sequence in which Donald gets into the soundtrack, represented by a moving line. So much more happens on-screen that no synopsis of this fast and funny picture will begin to do it justice. A must for all ages.
