Charrier, a minor French writer, is befriended by the more successful author Reyer and his wife, Audran. They take Charrier into their Bavarian villa so he can work on a series of stories about Germany, but slowly he becomes obsessed with the couple's happiness and plots to overpower and destroy it. When Reyer goes away on business, Charrier tries to seduce Audran. She rejects him, and Charrien discovers that she has a secret lover. He takes photographs of the two and hands them over to Reyer on his return. Reyer ends up stabbing his wife and calling the police. Charrier is overwhelmed with guilt, knowing he is responsible for the killing, and tries to persuade a cynical public that he is the real culprit. Chabrol, the most obviously Alfred Hitchcock-inspired member of the French New Wave, provides some interesting touches in this drama, often showing characters' visions through the camera lens and then turning it directly at the audience. leave a comment
