A man's guilt over the accidental death of his best friend's wife (they were lovers and he accidentally kills her in the heat of passion) almost forces him to confess to the murder. His wife is more concerned about the family honor, so she poisons him. A highly structured, dark film that
reveals the hypocrisy in bourgeois Japan, where honor has more relevance than love. Claude Chabrol would examine similar themes and content in his JUST BEFORE NIGHTFALL (1971).
