The Texan: Review
In 1885, Cooper, an infamous bandit known as the Llano Kid, rides into a small town policed by Marcus, a sheriff obssessed with the Bible. The brash bandit soon enters into a game of poker at the local saloon and finds himself faced with a cheating opponent. Cooper is forced to kill the gambler in self-defense and beat it out of town on the next train to Galveston. On board he meets Apfel, a rather shady character who has been hired by wealthy Mexican aristocrat Dunn to find her long-lost son who disappeared when he was 10 years old. Dunn has offered a $1,000 reward if Apfel can find the boy, now a young man. Certain he can bilk the old woman out of her estate, Apfel convinces Cooper--who speaks Spanish and looks Latin--to pose as Dunn's son. Coached by Apfel, Cooper fools the old woman with ease. At the same time, Cooper begins to fall in love with his "niece," Wray. As the two grow close, Cooper learns that the man he killed at the poker game was Dunn's real son, and he decides to back out of the plot. Determined to get Dunn's money, Apfel forms a gang of thugs to attack the ranch and steal the fortune. Meanwhile, sheriff Marcus has finally caught up to Cooper at Dunn's ranch. Cooper asks that Marcus not arrest him until after nightfall so that he can help defend Dunn from Apfel's forces. During the battle, Cooper is wounded and Apfel is killed. Impressed with Cooper's obvious commitment to Dunn and Wray, Marcus lets the bandit go and claims that Apfel's body is that of the Llano Kid. Based on an O. Henry short story entitled "The Double-Dyed Deceiver," THE TEXAN was given an impressive production by Paramount and was rewarded with strong box-office receipts. After his success in THE VIRGINIAN (1929), Cooper found himself a hot property at Paramount, and the studio began placing him in starring roles. The additional responsibility and exposure were good for Cooper, and he began to establish himself as an actor of high caliber. THE TEXAN marked the third romantic teaming of Cooper and Wray. (A fourth film, PARAMOUNT ON PARADE [1930] was just a variety revue designed to show off the studio's stable of stars.) The first two were LEGION OF THE CONDEMNED and THE FIRST KISS (both in 1928). While the pair played well together, the team wasn't very popular with the public, and they made only one more film together, ONE SUNDAY AFTERNOON (1933). Director Cromwell's assistant was Henry Hathaway-still two years from directing his first feature--who would later direct Cooper in seven films, including THE LIVES OF A BENGAL LANCER (1935) and SOULS AT SEA (1937). THE TEXAN was remade by Paramount in 1939 as THE LLANO KID, starring Tito Guizar in the title role.
