This simple German comedy would probably have been completely forgotten had it not had the distinction of being the film in which Olivier made his cinematic debut. Harvey is married to Olivier, a painter who creates futuristic works. His career is going nowhere when suddenly he "drowns" in a boating accident. Harvey is accused of his murder, but a man confesses to the crime. While Harvey dines with her lawyers to celebrate her exoneration, Olivier turns up. He was the confessed murderer, also the putative victim, and now, having shaved his beard, he no longer needs to be missing. He and Harvey had concocted the entire scheme in order to make Olivier a name--and thus sell his paintings. Two versions of this film were simultaneously made by the famed Universum Film Aktiengesellschaft (UFA) studios of Germany, a common practice of the day. One version, in German, featured Willy Fritsch in Olivier's role. Oscar Homolka played a part in the German-language version. This English-language version plays like what it is, a standard programmer. Harvey played the same role in both films and does a good job here, as does Olivier. But the story is slight and has an easily predictable outcome. Critics of the day had mixed reactions to the film, but most agreed that Olivier was a talented actor with a good future ahead of him. A section of the film was later seen in the compilation film, ELSTREE STORY, in 1952. leave a comment
