A rare adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe from the British, this tautly paced expansion of "The Tell-Tale Heart" finds Payne as a crippled librarian who is shy and sensitive about his handicap. Encouraged by his friend, Walsh, Payne introduces himself to the beautiful Corri, who lives across the road, and arranges a date with her. Although Corri is polite to Payne, she really has eyes for lothario Walsh. Eventually, the lovesick Payne catches Corri and Walsh together and is driven to murder his best friend. Payne hides the body beneath the floorboards of his house, but he is driven mad by the sound of the dead man's beating heart. Well directed by Ernest Morris, who conveys a palpable sense of claustrophobia and paranoia, the film is marred somewhat by its hokey and totally unnecessary twist ending. leave a comment
